Living Rock is committed to ongoing learning, and Anti-Racism work is primarily done through education. Living Rock offered youth opportunities to participate in regular Anti-Racism workshops, outings, events, and projects throughout 2007. Youth earned incentives according to their level
of participation in the events offered through Living Rock or its partners and took leadership and ownership of the initiatives presented throughout the year.
In 2007 Living Rock's Anti-Racism program launched a campaign to address racism. "Turn Off The Lights On Racism" was the result of a youth visioning team who wanted to come up with a piece of media to address racism in a unique and inclusive way. The poem spoken in the video was written by a
youth who desires to see a change in his community and world. The campaign includes the video, a website and community training workshops. To view the commercial or access our website resources please visit www.turnoffracism.ca
In 2007 youth responded to an act of violence towards a new Canadian youth who was beaten up because of race. Youth motioned that there needs to be more dialogue between Hamilton youth and new immigrant youth in order to help with a safe integration into Canadian society. Youth began to meet
regularly with new Canadians to discuss cultural differences and how to stay safe in Canadian cities.
